αlpha uses a woman’s age, the concentration of serum markers, measurements of ultrasound markers and other details of the pregnancy, to estimate the woman’s risk of having a pregnancy with Down’s syndrome, trisomy 18, trisomy 13, neural tube defects or pre-eclampsia.
αlpha uses serum markers in the second trimester of pregnancy (14 - 22 weeks gestation) and both serum and ultrasound markers in the first trimester of pregnancy (10 - 13 weeks gestation). It allows the use of up to 12 screening markers.
αlpha is suitable for first trimester, second trimester, integrated and sequential screening for Down’s syndrome, trisomy 18 and pre-eclampsia, second trimester screening for NTDs and first trimester, integrated and sequential screening for trisomy 13. αlpha can implement a reflex DNA screening protocol in which women with a Down’s syndrome, trisomy 18 or trisomy 13 risk above a specified level have a maternal plasma DNA test. Women with a risk below this level receive no further testing. More information can be found here.
